Chapter Fifteen

“So, what’s the plan for today?” Ginger asked Marsh over breakfast the next morning.

It had been too cold to spend the entire night in the pickup truck, so after a cozy nap, they’d come back to his apartment in the barn and spent the rest of the night in his comfy bed, burning through his box of condoms.

“I have to check on the cows. Two of them are about ready to calve, and one of the pipes burst at my parents’ house.”

“But, it’s Saturday,” Ginger said, then realized how work was never done on a farm. “Sorry. I guess cows don’t calve on schedule. Is there some way I can help?”

“You’re not used to being around cows, and I’m not sure you know how to use a pipe wrench.”

Was this his way of telling her to get lost?

Ginger swallowed a dry piece of toast and nodded. “I had a great time. You’ve been a wonderful host.”

“Yeah, well, I had a great time, too.” He tipped his head back and emptied his orange juice. “Will you be around this evening for the bachelor’s auction? They’re having it at the Come Again.”

Yep. He was definitely giving her the signals that their gig was over. It was her fault for wanting more—temporary insanity. After all, the agreement was for two days and two nights, and he more than delivered.

“I might swing by, but it depends on what my sisters want to do.”

“Well, I’ll look for you.” He got up from his chair and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I hate to eat and run, but the water’s turned off at the house.”

“I know. It’s fine.” She glanced at his cell phone which received another text message. “They’re waiting for you.”

“Should I drive you home?”

She hated this awkwardness, and was surprised it would come down so hard between her and Marsh. Just a half-hour ago, they were soaping each other in the shower.

“No, it’s okay. I’ll call Honey. You get to your pipes.” She flashed him a no-worries smile.

“Sure.” He looked distracted as he read his message, then tucked his phone into the holder.

“I’ll just grab my stuff and be out of your way,” Ginger said. “I’ll text you my friend’s name and phone number. You have my key and directions. Everything should be set. Oh, and I’ll look up a list of places you should see while you’re there. My favorite restaurants and you definitely need to catch a Broadway show.”

Why was she babbling?

He was halfway out the door before he came back to her and took her in his arms. “Hey. I won’t ever forget you.”

“I won’t forget you, either.” She let herself rest briefly in his embrace before pushing off. “Let me know if you need anything. If you get lost or need any advice.”

“I will.” He kissed her and went back to the door. “I’ll see you around.”
